Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Stories List of Categories

  • I've noticed the stories are grouped into categories. How are these categories decided?

We group the stories into categories to make it easier for readers to find work and authors that interest them. Often, a story will contain elements from many categories. In that case, we'll place it where we feel it's the best fit. If you ever read a story that you feel has been miscategorized, Use the Report This Story feature to let us know, and we'll review it. We add a new category whenever we have enough stories that fit into it. If you have an idea for a new category, feel free to let us know!

  • What do the colored icons beside stories mean?

The yellow NEW's (New) denote stories which have recently been published on

The red H's (Hot) denote stories which have received 10 or more votes from readers, and maintain an average vote of 4.5 out of 5 or better.

The yellow E's (Editor) denote "Editor's Choice" stories. These are pieces that we really like - just our opinion.

The green W's (Winner) are next to stories that have been chosen by readers as winners in our Monthly, Yearly, or Special contests.

In the future, we may add other icons. As we do, we'll add them to the FAQ.

  • I want to search your archive for stories by date, by subject matter, or by author. Is this possible?

Absolutely! If you are reading a story by an author you enjoy, you can access their full story listing by clicking their name. You'll find stories sorted by category on the Site Index page. All stories posted within the last 7 days can be found listed in chronological order (newest to oldest) in our New Stories section.

If you're not able to find what you're looking for in the above categories, you can also use our Search Page, which can be found halfway down the Site Index page. From there, you can search the story archive by date, by category, by author, and by specific terms.

If you type a word in the Search Text field, your results will be stories which include that word in their title or key words. You can also use the more advanced Boolean search to narrow your search further. That sounds complicated, but it's easy! Just use the following symbols:

+ (plus sign) - this word must be present in every story returned.

    - (minus sign) - this word must not be present in any story returned.

"" (quotes around a phrase) - this specific phrase, as typed in quotes, must be present in every story returned.

    * (asterisk) - wildcard.

    Here are some examples:
apple banana - find stories that contain at least one of these words.

+apple +juice - find stories that contain both words.

+apple macintosh - find stories that contain the word "apple", but rank it higher if it also contain "macintosh".

+apple -macintosh - find stories that contain the word "apple" but not "macintosh".

"some words" - find stories that contain the phrase "some words", but not "some pretty words" or "some naughty words".

plan* - find stories with words containing the letters "plan" in them (i.e. "plan", "plans", "planet", any word starting with "plan").
